High Cholesterol Foods to Avoid

,
Paleo Breakfast:

For those who suffer from high cholesterol the best and first way to control and lower their cholesterol levels is through their diet. But many people are confused as to what constitutes a high cholesterol food they need to avoid and a low cholesterol food. This is because there is a difference between dietary cholesterol and blood cholesterol.

High Cholesterol Foods to Avoid

Generally most health guidelines recommend that dietary cholesterol not exceed 300 mg per day for most healthy people, but if one suffers from high LDL blood cholesterol levels then this intake should be not more than 200 mg per day.

Cholesterol, a waxy like substance, is only found in animal meat and tissues and its sources include red meat, eggs, fish, poultry, and dairy products. On the flip side any food derived from plant sources is cholesterol free, including high fat plants food sources such as avocado's and peanut butter. This is where the confusion usually happens because eating large amounts of vegetable oil, which is virtually 100% food fat, can significantly raise blood cholesterol levels, particularly when eaten with high cholesterol foods.

The fact is that blood LDL cholesterol levels are highly influenced by the amount of saturated fat that one eats. There is a relationship between the amounts of saturated fat one eats the LDL cholesterol levels in the blood. For every one percent increase in calories obtained by eating saturated fat, blood cholesterol levels go up around two percent. Conversely for every one percent decrease in saturated fat intake cholesterol levels will reduce about two percent.

The thing to remember when it comes avoiding high cholesterol foods is that while doing so will decrease LDL cholesterol levels, reducing saturated fat intake has a bigger impact on these levels then many people are aware of. This does not mean that those who suffer from high cholesterol can eat high cholesterol foods, but they should be aware that there is more to reducing cholesterol then just this one thing.

The reason for this confusion with the way cholesterol can increase in the blood stream is the way many foods are cooked and/or served. Let's look at one of everyone's favorite breakfasts; bacon/sausage and eggs. We all know that eggs are high in cholesterol, but what we don't know is that the cholesterol in eggs has a small impact on blood cholesterol levels. It's the high amount of saturated fat in the bacon or sausage that has a far larger impact on LDL cholesterol levels.

Another culprit is deep fat fried foods. Many foods are for the most part harmless until they are breaded and fried in hot oil. In fact, many fish and seafood choices are considered to be good for us because of the omega-3 fatty acids that they contain, but as soon as they are deep fried and eaten any benefits are cancelled by the saturated fat that raises bad LDL cholesterol.

When it comes to high cholesterol foods to avoid it is important to remember that these types of food aren't necessarily bad in and of themselves if eaten in moderation. The real problem occurs when they are combined with high levels of saturated fat, which has a more profound effect on blood cholesterol levels.

Special Dietary Requirements for Children

,
Paleo Breakfast:

Children have nutritional needs different from those of adults in three respects:

Special Dietary Requirements for Children

1) Their energy requirement per unit of weight is higher than that of adults.

2) Their food should contain a higher proportion of body-building materials (protein and mineral elements) and of vitamins than that of adults.

3) Their diet should be selected with special care to include only foods which are readily digestible.

Energy Requirements

Qualitatively, the nutritional factors necessary for the child are the same as those required to nourish an adult, namely, energy of fuel, protein, mineral salts and vitamins, plus suitable amounts of water and fiber. Quantitatively, however, their requirements differ. This is due to the fact that:

1) The basal metabolism, the amount of energy used in internal processes of the body, is considerably higher in youth than in adult life.

2) The child is usually much more active than the adult, and uses a great deal of energy in work and play.

3) Lastly, the child must have extra energy to grow on or to store in the new tissues that are being built.

Need for Tissue-Building Material

Protein is required for building muscle tissues, as well as for the growth of the various organs; whereas the average adult does not need more than 10 percent of his calories in the form of proteins, about 15 percent of the calories as protein will probably be safer allowance for growing children, who are storing protein.

Moreover, probably about two-thirds of the protein in the diet of children should be from the foods of animal origin (chiefly milk and eggs), which furnish complete proteins and those more efficient for growth than vegetable proteins. Hence, if a child is fed a quart of milk daily, he will be fairly certain to receive a safe surplus of protein in the best available form.

Digestive Abilities

Lastly, it should be fairly obvious that it is essential to limit the foods used in the diet of children to such foods as are easily digestive or readily handled by the digestive tract of the child at the special age for which one is planning.

The alimentary tract of infants is not equipped to digest starches and fats, and only gradually develops the ability to handle these food materials so that only small amounts of very thoroughly cooked starchy foods can be given during the first year, while fats must be restricted in amount even in the second year.

Infants and young children seem to have less immunity to the presence of bacteria in the intestinal tract and the mucous membrane lining their alimentary tract is also more sensitive to irritating substances than in later life. Foods which are difficult to masticate, such as vegetable, nuts, etc., should be given to young children only in finely minced or ground form.

Raw vegetables and most raw fruits have to be introduced with caution as the digestive tract becomes stringer and the teeth are well-developed.

How to Burn Belly Fat by Eating Real Food and Doing Less Exercise

,
Paleo Breakfast:

Many people turn to health food when they decide to burn belly fat. The problem is that the so-called "health food" you find in the supermarket is doing more damage than good. Many of the products that are labeled "low-fat" are often packed with sugar to make up for the flavor of reduced fat. Sugar that isn't burned is stored as fat. Therefore, if you are not understanding the labels on your food products, you could be consuming more sugar and gaining more weight.

How to Burn Belly Fat by Eating Real Food and Doing Less Exercise

A Solution to Your Food Dilemmas

Figuring out what to eat is probably one of the hardest things anyone deals with when trying to lose weight. There are so many diet books and plans out there, all that occurs is information overload. As for myself, I have realized that reducing the amount of carbs I eat works well for losing weight and keeping it off. This means eating real food such as lean meat, plenty of fresh veggies, fresh fruit, and good fats.

I avoid eating bread, baked goods, drinking soda, and stay away from processed food as much as possible. These types of carbs convert into sugar when eaten in excess. It is very easy to overeat foods such as bread or baked goods. A typical breakfast could be a bagel or breakfast burrito. Lunch could be a sandwich. Dinner may consist of pasta or a side dish of potatoes. Do you see how easily your daily carbohydrate intake can add up? All of that food, not to mention what you drink and sometimes even including dessert!

Two eating plans that work well are the paleo diet and clean eating diet. Both promote the consumption of whole foods (meat, vegetables, fruit, nuts, etc.) and avoiding processed food. You can find plenty of information about both online.

Exercise Less and Burn Fat Like Crazy

A common mistake that happens with people attempting to lose weight is that they become cardio junkies. It is assumed that performing a lot of cardio will burn fat. What tends to happen is that too much cardio causes muscle loss. Our bodies need muscle mass in order to burn fat effectively.

If you are not a fan of cardio, then you will like knowing that strength training (lifting weights) is much more effective than cardio when it comes to burning fat. Our muscles burn calories even at rest. Therefore, the more muscle we build, the more calories burned.

Of course the options above are not for everyone. Everyone has their own requirements when it comes to learning how to burn belly fat.

Carb Diet Cycling - Lose Fat, Not Muscle

,
Paleo Breakfast:

What does Edward Cullen and Insulin levels have in common? Nothing really but you would think vampires have an appreciation for the effects of carbohydrates on blood sugar levels!

Carb Diet Cycling - Lose Fat, Not Muscle

Anyways to look as lean as Robert Pattinson does for the Twilight series, you might want to try Carb Cycling to loose fat but not muscle along the way.

So shoveling breads, cereals, and pastas into yourself as if it's a race to the finish, is not the answer.

Eating meals or snacks like this which are high in carbohydrates will send your blood glucose level into outer space.

To counter for this rapid rise, your pancreas secretes the hormone insulin into the bloodstream which lowers the levels of blood glucose.

This insulin level caused by excess carbohydrates will ultimately promote the accumulation of body fat. OOPS and that's what we don't want!

In other words, if we eat too many carbohydrates, we're sending a hormonal message to store fat.

However, regulating your blood sugar level is the most effective way to maintain your fat-burning capacity.

It also essential for good health and lowers the risk of diseases such as Type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

A delicate balance of diet, insulin production and physical activity is necessary for optimal blood glucose levels.

With the onset of modern civilisation, our physiology suddenly was asked to digest and metabolize larger amounts of sugar and starch especially refined sugars. I follow my version of the "Paleo" diet to minimise these consequences).

But if we are unable to utilise the amount of carbohydrates we eat, certain symptoms will develop.

The problem is that insulin is essentially a storage hormone, evolved to put aside excess carbohydrate calories in the form of fat in case of future famine.

Not only do increased insulin levels tell the body to store carbohydrates as fat, they also tell it not to release any stored fat.

This makes it impossible for you to use your own stored body fat for energy. The excess carbohydrates in your diet not only make you fat, they make sure you stay fat. What a Bummer!

Insulin also causes hunger. As blood sugar increases following a carbohydrate meal, insulin rises with the eventual result of lower blood sugar. This results in hunger, amazingly often only a couple of hours after a meal.

Cravings, usually for sweets, are frequently part of this cycle, leading you to resort to snacking, often on more carbohydrates.

PICK THE RIGHT CARBS

The best fuel source to use throughout the day are complex starches (carbs). These provide sustained energy minimising sugar spikes and stabilises blood sugar levels and lets your workout last longer and retain intensity.

These starches will break down slowly and the body doesn't have any chance to store body fat and rather be stored as muscle glycogen.

Complex carbs will minimise muscle catabolism (breakdown) and ensure muscle anabolism (growth).

Examples of complex carbs are; yams, sweet potatoes, wild rice, beans, legumes, red potatoes, raw oats.

These will store glycogen and convert to an energy source for your muscles, brain, heart and other organs, along with vegetables, fruit and fibrous grains provide a huge source for anabolic growth.

PRIME TIME - CARB EATING

  • Losing weight without losing muscle is related to maintain blood sugar -insulin levels.
  • Timing is important get it wrong and areas that are affected is sports performance, injury risk, feeling sluggish, increased appetite and slows metabolism.
  • Best times to ingest carbs are in the morning and before and after a workout. These are the times when your muscles need carbohydrates the most.
  • If you workout without carbs then breaking down lean mass for amino acids becomes a real possibility.

Typical Nutrition on Workout Days

Note: The time when carbs are added in the day

7am: 1 cup oatmeal with 2 scoops whey

10 am: 2 Whole eggs, 4 egg whites, 1 piece of toast

12 Noon: 200g chicken breast, 1 piece of fruit, black coffee

2pm: Pre Workout 1/2 cup cottage cheese, 1 medium sweet potato

4pm: Post Workout 2 scoops Whey with chocolate milk, handful of nuts

6pm: 1 can tuna, 2 pieces vegetables

9pm: 170g lean steak, lettuce, green vegetables

PRIME TIME - LOW CARB EATING

  • Carbs fuels your muscles to help with working out then conversely on days you are less active reduce your carb intake and let your body use the existing sugars in your blood.
  • This again is similar to carb cycling which works very well when trying to loose weight. I follow the Eat Stop Eat program to for carb cycling to loose body fat (currently at 8%).

Typical Nutrition on Non Workout Days

Note: The reduction of carbs in the day

7am: 2 scoops whey

10 am: 6 egg whites with lean chicken

12 Noon: 230g chicken breast, green tea

3pm: 1/2 cup cottage cheese

4.30pm: 1/2 cup yogurt

5pm: 1 can tuna, 1 pieces vegetables

8pm: 170g lean steak, 6 stalks asparagus

10pm: 5 hard boiled eggs

FOOD HABITS

Eating protein with each meal is one of the best ways to stabilise blood sugar levels examples are; Lean red meats, fish, chicken, eggs, legumes, nuts, seeds.

Chromium helps to normalise blood sugar levels examples are; broccoli, wholegrain cereals, nuts, mushrooms and soy beans.

Fibre slows absorption of glucose examples are; wholegrain breads and breads, brown rice, legumes, fruit and vegetables.

TIPS

  • Drinking plenty of water is another way to lower blood sugar levels.
  • Drinking at least eight glasses of water per day will also flush harmful toxins from the body, help with weight loss, and keep the skin healthy.
  • Taking Ginseng or adding Cinnamon to food has been shown to regulate blood sugar levels.
  • Never skip a meal, especially breakfast, and eat healthy snacks between meals. Eating frequently prevents hunger pangs and the binges that follow, provides consistent energy, and may be the single most effective way to maintain metabolism efficiency.
  • When you will be away from home or work, plan your snacks and take them along so that you will be able to eat regularly and won't be tempted by junk food.
  • High fibre snacks and meals also help to regulate your blood sugar level. The fibre slows down glucose absorption and your rate of digestion, keeping your blood sugar level more consistent and warding off feelings of hunger.
  • Eating apples and oranges are a better choice than drinking apple and orange juice.
  • Exercise: Try to get 30 to 60 minutes of walking in four to five days a week.
  • An easy way to lower blood sugar levels is to stay fit and healthy. Regular exercise not only helps lower blood sugar levels, but also helps fight infections.
  • Staying active and taking regular exercise can also help with blood pressure problems. Exercise also helps control the body's weight and regulate cholesterol levels.
  • This exercise does not need to be a grueling workout. Thirty minutes of exercise a day, even walking, will help to lower blood sugar levels. Walking to the store instead of taking the car is all that may be necessary to provide you with some much needed exercise. Any extra exercise, including working out in a gym.

Having a balanced diet is not only healthy but ensures that you receive the maximal amount of nutrients which ensures all your bodily functions are able to operate at their fullest potential.

Thanks you for reading this and I hope it assists with your workouts.

The Nutrition Solution for America's Woes

,
Paleo Breakfast:

If you are a typical American you live on a diet of processed foods and inactivity. Unfortunately, this lifestyle is 100% antithetical to the optimal functioning of our bodies. The genes we carry in our DNA are the result of millions of years of adaptation and procreation. As our needs change we experience micro-evolution and alter our genes slightly from one generation to the next. The result has been a genetic structure that is highly evolved, extremely resilient, and has the potential for extraordinary health and fitness. However, between 5,000 to 10,000 years ago (an evolutionary drop in the bucket) we discovered farming and with that came twinkies. Currently, we collectively possess an arrogance that despite the millions of years of adaptation and micro-evolution, we believe that we can produce a healthier human fuel in a factory using the cheapest inputs, than what the earth provides. We get our health advice from certified and licensed USDA advocates who promote upside down pyramids and antiquated Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA). We have allowed the dairy industry to convince us that as adults we should drink another mammal's milk, meant for a calf, as our premier and, ostensibly, only source of calcium. We may even have been convinced that a processed wheat product is the breakfast of champions or that consuming a highly inflammatory combination of wheat and corn will reduce cholesterol because it is "Heart Healthy". Can someone please tell me what a nut cluster is?

The Nutrition Solution for America's Woes

"Well, all this nutritional technology must have been good for something?". I beg to differ. As the poster child for nutritional technology the United States is an embarrassing case study. Diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer incidences are rising. Whereas many developing countries are suffering from diseases of inadequate nutrition, we are suffering from diseases excess improper nutrition. We eat a lot of junk, and some of it even says "Healthy" right on the box. When native or traditional cultures adapt a Western food culture, they begin to see a rise in Western diseases as well.

"So smarty pants, how do we fix the problem?" A quick study of human anthropology shows us that hunter-gatherers were healthier than their farming ancestors. This can be studied through bones recovered from each of the 2 groups. When we ate food provided by the earth, that our DNA had millions of years to adapt to, we were healthiest. Would you advocate a processed cereal for Koala bears called, "Eucalyptus Bites" or should we just allow them to continue eating the leaves they have been eating since the beginning of their existence.

In conclusion, we live in a modern world with ice cream, and cup cakes, and granola bars. We can't eat 100% like hunter-gatherers; I understand that. We can, however, base the majority of our diet on the foods that the earth has created specifically for us that are lock and key with our nutritional requirements and therefore, produce optimal health. They are: Vegetables, fruits, meats, nuts, seeds, and plants, not to mention other complex celled organisms like seaweed and mushrooms. Some people call it the Paleo diet, I call it Real Food. Start small, do what you have to do, just get there. Let's keep it simple.

It's a Crime to Lose Weight Quickly

,
Paleo Breakfast:

Ok, not a literal crime. But we had to get your attention for a very important message. Everyone wants to lose weight quickly. Sure, we get that. We're on board! But there is "fast" and then there is "suicidal."

It's a Crime to Lose Weight Quickly

Remember, the goal isn't just to lower the number on the scale as fast as possible. You could starve, take drugs, or do any number of other harmful things to achieve that. The goal is to reduce body fat rapidly while optimizing health.

Losing weight too quickly brings with it a host of ill effects that make "optimizing health" impossible.

Many turn to any method that will lower that number they see on the scale almost overnight. It's a great motivator! You see the number go down and you think, "Wow, I'm making progress."

Unfortunately, a lot of that initial 'success' is actually just water loss. Consume too little water and you stress the kidneys. Their main function is to cleanse the body of toxins. It takes water to do that.

Many others turn to ultra-low carb diets to lose weight quickly. Not a horrible idea since most people consume far more carbohydrates than they need. They also tend to consume them in less than ideal forms like complex sugars, high-fructose corn syrup, etc.

Many studies suggest HFCS is a contributor to increased risk of obesity, diabetes, and other sugar-related health problems. It's believed to up the odds of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. It's used in some fruit drinks, breakfast bars, yogurt and a great many things otherwise thought to be healthy.

Still, things are not so simple. (We all wish they were!) Some carbs are essential, both in amount and kind. Carbohydrates usually come in the form of some sugar, like glucose. That is the body's main source of energy.

That energy is used to power and repair cells. It's used to drive a bewildering array of biochemical processes. And, of course, it's used to power basic muscle movements. One of those is the beating of your heart. Clearly, some carbs are vital for living.

Making useful recommendations is complicated by ongoing controversy by experts over how much to consume.

USDA guidelines suggest 50% of our daily diet should come from carbohydrates. (That's 250 grams for a 2,000 calorie diet.) Those may be in the form of grains (chiefly bread and cereals) or legumes. Or, they may come from fruits such as apples or bananas.

Advocates of the paleo diet and other low carb diets say "No!" They suggest that our digestive systems didn't evolve to eat lots of grain. Lower carb fruits like blackberries and raspberries are preferred by South Beach, Zone, and similar diet plans.

Almost everyone agrees, though, you should stop committing felonies against your digestive system. Cut total calories. Eat more slowly. Lay off the pizza for a while. Balance proteins, fats, and carbs in the right proportions.

Adopt a program for losing weight quickly, sure. But do it safely. You'll shed body fat and optimize your health at the same time. That's following the law... the laws of nature and nutrition science.
